A Long Way from Chicago is a "novel in stories" (or short story cycle) by Richard Peck, published September 1, 1998 by Dial Press. The novel surrounds a brother and sister, Joey and Mary Alice, who leave Chicago for a week every summer during the Great Depression to visit their paternal grandmother, the unbelievably feisty Grandma Dowdel who lives in a teeny tiny town in the Illinois countryside.

Taking a production approach to my favorite childhood novel, I produced graphic props for A Long Way from Chicago. Inspired by the graphics from this era, 1929 to 1942, and with research, crafted store signs, newspaper, businesscards, and train tickets that would seemlessly blend into this time period and bring the story alive.
